Tips for Getting Kitchen Remodeling Estimates

There are many reasons why you may decide to remodel your kitchen. Some homeowners desire a more spacious, efficient kitchen. Others want to add value to their home. No matter why you want to make improvements, it's important to set a budget. Kitchen renovations can be costly, and without a strict budget you can end up spending more than you can afford. In this article, you'll learn tips for getting kitchen remodeling estimates.

The first thing you'll need to do when thinking about your budget is to decide what kind of improvements you want to make. A small renovation project on one area of your kitchen could cost as little as $1000 or even less. On the other hand, a major renovation can cost tens of thousands of dollars. The good news is that most homeowners are able to recoup the expenses when they sell their home.

After you've decided exactly what you want to remodel in your kitchen and the maximum amount of money you can spend, it's time to start interviewing contractors. Never go with the first contractor you meet with. They may end up being the one you choose, but it's still wise to do a bit of comparison shopping first. When going through your local Yellow Pages, make a list of at least three contractors to visit. If you have friends, family or co-workers who have had successful renovations performed you might want to ask them to refer you to a good contractor.

When you meet with each company, have a notepad and pen handy. It helps to come prepared with a list of questions to ask. You'll want to find out how long the contractor has been in business, what their specialty is, and if they are licensed, bonded and insured. Also, it's important to get references from previous customers. If the contractor refuses to provide them, then that is a warning sign that they are probably not the best choice. By talking to previous customers, you can get an honest opinion of the quality of the company and their work. After you've narrowed the field down to the top three, you can request kitchen remodeling estimates from each one. If each of your top choices are equally experienced, all that's left to do is choose the contractor who offers you the best price and time frame.
