Keeping Kitchen Remodeling Cost Down
![]() |
Kitchen remodeling is one of the most common home improvement projects undertaken by homeowners. After all, the kitchen is often the center of a home, so it's only natural that people want the most beautiful and efficient kitchen possible. While kitchen renovations can be costly, most of the time you will be able to get those costs back if you ever decide to sell your home. A study conducted by MSN House and Home found that most people regain anywhere from 90 to 102 percent of the cost of their kitchen remodeling back upon the sale of their home. Even so, renovations can be expensive. Here are some tips for keeping kitchen remodeling cost down to a reasonable level:
The first thing you should do is take a long look at your kitchen and decide where changes are needed the most. You can go small in scope, or do a total upgrade. There are many different areas of the kitchen that can be improved. Cabinets, counters, floors, walls, appliances -- these are all areas where homeowners often make updates. Some people end up adding on to their kitchens while others install space-saving islands for a more efficient work space.
Depending on the improvements you want to make, your kitchen renovations could run anywhere from as little as $1,000 or less to as much as $20,000 or more. If you do the work yourself, you'll of course end up paying less than you would if you hired a contractor. Some projects, like installing laminate floors, painting the walls or refinishing the cabinets are fairly simple for a handy homemaker to do on their own. Larger scale projects like custom cabinetry or room additions will of course need to be done by a qualified professional contractor. You may want to hire a contractor who is also a CKD, or Certified Kitchen Designer, to ensure the best results. Or, you could use a designer to plan the renovations and a separate contractor to perform them.
One way to keep kitchen remodeling cost down is to comparison shop for materials and even contractors. By shopping around, you're likely to find that prices vary. When choosing a contractor, make sure the ones you are considering are licensed and experienced. While you may have heard horror stories about dishonest contractors, there are lots of good ones out there as well. By checking references, verifying licensure and insurance and comparing rates, you are better equipped to choose the most qualified, as well as the most affordable contractor for your needs.
